 Quebec City In Winter

Our "Summer" Vacation

Back in November, I had a realization many parents know all too well:

A summer vacation with kids in tow just was not going to happen. Schedules were packed, calendars were chaos, and I needed a Plan B fast.

So I did what I do best. I got strategic.

I wanted something affordable, last minute friendly, and off season… and that is how Quebec City in winter became the winner.

Now let me be honest. It was cold. Average winter temps hover around 20°F in January, but we hit Quebec during a full on cold snap. Real feel temps ranged from 13 below to 23 below zero. 🥶

Did we survive? Absolutely.

Did we duck into cafés and bakeries every chance we got for hot drinks and snacks? Also yes. And honestly, that became part of the charm.

The magic? Christmas does not end early in Quebec City. Decorations stay up through Epiphany, so the entire Old Town still sparkles. Cobblestone streets, historic buildings, twinkling lights. It genuinely feels like you have stepped into Europe without the long flight.

One of the highlights was Montmorency Falls just outside the city. We took the cable car up and saw the falls partially frozen. Dramatic, icy, and absolutely stunning.

On our second to last day, we headed to Valcartier, home to the only Ice Hotel in North America. And yes, it is as cool and cold as it sounds.

We ordered drinks served in solid blocks of ice, trickier to drink than expected. Beyond the Ice Hotel, Valcartier also has a massive snow tubing park. The runs are labeled like ski slopes from beginner to expert, and on some you can link up eight tubes at once. We even went down one run in a raft like you would use for river rafting. Pure joy, at least for me.

To wrap up the trip, we did the historic toboggan run next to the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac, operating since 1882. Fully iced over and incredibly fast.

So would I visit Quebec City again in winter? Without hesitation.

Just one pro tip. Budget a little extra for food because all those cozy café stops add up and you will not want to skip a single one.

If this kind of smart off season travel sounds appealing, whether it is winter wonderlands, shoulder season steals, or trips that work around real life, that is exactly what I help my clients plan.

And yes… I have ideas for you. 😉

Rue du Petit Champlain

Rue du Petit Champlain is one of the most charming streets in North America, tucked in the heart of Old Quebec’s Lower Town. Lined with boutiques, art galleries, cozy cafés, and historic stone buildings, it feels like stepping into a European village. In winter, the twinkling lights and fresh snow turn it into a postcard perfect scene you will not forget.

Montmorency Falls

Montmorency Falls is one of the most breathtaking natural sights near Quebec City, standing even taller than Niagara Falls. In winter, the cascading water freezes into dramatic ice formations, creating a massive “sugar loaf” at the base. Whether you take the cable car up or walk the suspension bridge, the views are unforgettable.

Villages Vacances Valcartier

Villages Vacances Valcartier is a winter playground just outside Quebec City and home to North America’s only Ice Hotel. The massive snow tubing park features runs for every level, from gentle slopes to high speed thrills where you can link multiple tubes together. Between the Ice Hotel, snow slides, and festive atmosphere, it is pure cold weather fun for all ages.
